2007 GREENSBORO SWIM FOR CANCER

On behalf of the coaches and swim team chairwomen and CSA representatives, we are happy to announce the start of SWIM FOR CANCER 2007!  For those returning swimmers, we hope all of you remember all of the fun and success that we have had the last couple of years.  New members – get ready! 

SWIM FOR CANCER is a WONDERFUL fundraiser organized by the Greensboro CSA.  Swimmers (and/or families) solicit pledges from sponsors for each length of the pool that they plan to swim (maximum of 40).  All money raised goes directly to the American Cancer Society and is tax deductible.  Last year the city raised over $173,000.00 which pushed the Grand Total for 35 years of contributions over the $2,000,000.00 mark!  Can you believe that?  Lawndale’s swimmers have helped raise over $2 million for Cancer research!  Last year alone we raised $6,001.00 which surpassed the previous year of fundraising once again!  Way to go Lizards; we keep getting bigger and better!

BIG NEWS! The American Cancer Society has gone “high tech” and has set up a WEBSITE where participants can create their own web page and send out e-mails to family and friends who can then contribute ONLINE!  Parents, please note that there is a “Youth Waiver” that you are required to fill out (only if your child would like to create a web page) in order to keep all of our swimmers and their identities safe.  The waiver can be downloaded online and there will be hard copies available in the Guard Shack; please turn them into Nicole or one of the coaches once they are completed.

ACS AWARDS:  As always, there will be Individual Awards from the American Cancer Society as well.  Unfortunately the former T-Shirt “Clubs” have been replaced with certificates.  The ACS will award swimmers who raise:     $75 or more      = One Pass to Wet ‘n’ Wild                

                                          $100 or more   = A new “Swim for Cancer” T-shirt & $100 Club Certificate

                                          $200, etc.         = “Club” Certificate

TEAM ACTIVITIES: As always, we will have TEAM activities throughout the season to add to the individual activities.  We will be notifying everyone of the specifics as the time gets closer but this year you can expect:

-    3^rd Annual Tennis Ball Decorating Party and Tow                      -   Success Charts/Kickboards (ongoing)

-    Throw a pie at the coaches (July 4^th)                                  -   “Crazy” Tennis Ball Awards (Mondays)

3^rd ANNUAL TENNIS BALL TOW: After the CONTINUED success (and envy of other bigger clubs), we will be continuing our special tribute in honor of Swim for Cancer.  To symbolize burden shared by EVERYONE who is touched by cancer, swimmers will have the option to “tow” a tennis ball behind them, (recommended $10 donation) during their swim.  We will notify everyone when the pledge cards can be picked up.  As you receive dedications, your completed pledge cards can be turned in on Mondays for a small award.  We will have another pizza/tennis ball decorating party prior to the tow and will be hanging honorarium posters again as well.  

THINGS TO DO:

-  Begin raising money; ask family, friends, neighbors and businesses to sponsor you.

-  Keep us posted, on MONDAY practices (beginning June 12^th), of your progress (# of tennis balls AND amount of $ sponsored) so that we can update your success on our charts and award Crazy Tennis Balls!

-  Swim your laps!

DATES: We are in the process of finalizing all of our dates for activities so please keep a look out for postings and more hand outs!  We are looking forward to another FUN and EXCITING year!!
